Our History

The Founding of Kie Balam

In the late 1980s, the Mora De León family recognized the deep educational needs within the rural communities of Quetzaltenango. This inspired a group of qualified, certified educators to found the Kie Balam Spanish School in 1990. Established with a rigorous academic foundation, our school is fully certified by Guatemala's departments of education and is officially registered with the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT).

Our Academic Credentials

From the very beginning, Kie Balam has been committed to providing a highly qualified service. Our founding director holds a Master of Arts (MA) in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern Illinois University and is certified as a Bilingual and Special Education teacher in the United States. To this day, all of our instructors are native Guatemalans with formal educational degrees and specialized training in language immersion, ensuring a top-tier learning experience in facilities equipped to host groups of up to 50 students year-round.

Our Social Mission and Community Impact

Kie Balam was envisioned not just as a language institute, but as a launchpad for meaningful social change. By combining intensive, personalized Spanish instruction with dedicated volunteer programs, Kie Balam has provided financial support and book donations to establish bilingual libraries in rural areas, offered special education and healthcare services in remote regions, organized literacy programs for abused women, and led regional reforestation and recycling efforts.

Kie Balam had the prestigious honor of serving as an official training center for international electoral observers during the historic 1996 Guatemalan elections—the very same year the Peace Accords were signed, bringing an end to the 36-year Internal Armed Conflict.

The Legacy of Café Q

That same year, in 1996, noticing that international students struggled to find vegetarian options in the city, we opened "Café Q"—proudly becoming the first vegetarian restaurant in Quetzaltenango. Together with the school, Café Q actively supported local Guatemalan artists through art exhibitions, live marimba concerts, and poetry readings. Most importantly, its profits directly funded social initiatives supporting low-income families, nursing homes, and orphanages, while also providing financial backing for Kie Balam students doing volunteer work in rural areas.

Looking to the Future

Today, over three decades later, we are profoundly proud of a mission that has positively impacted many people across the departments of Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán, and Quiché. Our outreach programs aim to continue bringing education to marginalized spaces, including the Granja Penal Cantel men's prison, the local women's prison, the Nuevos Horizontes women's shelter, the Jerusalem Home, the Xelajú Special Education School, and the Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC).

We firmly believe that education is the most powerful tool for driving social progress, and we remain deeply committed to doing our part to help build a brighter future for Guatemala.
