The City of Xela
The city of Quetzaltenango is affectionately known by locals as "Xela" (pronounced shell-ah), an abbreviation of its original Mayan name, "Xelajuj Noj".
It strikes the perfect balance—neither too big nor too small. It has just enough tourism to offer a great variety of hotels and restaurants, while completely retaining its authentic Guatemalan charm.
Xela is a must-visit destination for travelers who truly want to learn Spanish and immerse themselves in the local culture. The city features historic monuments and beautiful churches, alongside modern conveniences like banks, shopping malls, cinemas, cafes, and bars. The streets are narrow and picturesque, and almost everything is within walking distance. You'll also find a vibrant nightlife scene suited for all tastes and budgets.
